Program Title: Dead to Me: Navigating the Confluence of Death and Divorce.
Program Description: Death and divorce remain two of the more unpopular words in the English language. Sometimes the unlucky advisor deals with both at the same time. Rick will talk about the various ways a divorce or separation can affect a client’s rights in the probate process and planning that can be done to avoid unintended bequests and beneficiary designations. Things also get messy when death occurs after the divorce papers are filed, but before the divorce is finalized. He will also discuss the ethical issues implicated when a client informs his or her advisor that a spouse is soon to become an ex-spouse, especially where both spouses are clients.
